In the opening scene of Evil Dead Rise, we meet Jessica as a seemingly harmless young woman relaxing with friends in a secluded lakeside cabin. But the deceptive idyll suddenly turns into horror. Jessica initially appears quiet and somewhat unwell—sick, perhaps—but what appears to be a common cold turns out to be the sinister workings of a demonic force. Suddenly and without warning, she lapses into a brutal rage: She begins to attack her friend with cruel and supernatural force, brutally tearing off her scalp and leaving no doubt that she is no longer herself. Her body is possessed, her voice distorted, her eyes blank-Jessica is nothing but a tool of evil. She shreds her own face with a drone and decapitates her friend Caleb before emerging from the water with a horrifying look—a harbinger of the horrors to come.
