The Male Velociraptor Bust from Steven Spielberg's Academy Award®-winning sci-fi sequel The Lost World: Jurassic Park captures one of the franchise's most fearsome predators. On Isla Sorna, Velociraptors hunted the survivors as they ventured toward the island's dangerous interior.
For The Lost World: Jurassic Park, five practical effects were created to bring the raptors to life: three full-scale animatronics (one female and two male), an animatronic head and torso, and a pair of mechanized, wearable legs for foot shots. These practical effects, combined with ILM's CGI work, were used primarily in two iconic sequences-the Long Grass massacre and the Worker Village chase.
Because The Lost World: Jurassic Park featured both male and female raptors, a new and more vibrant color scheme was developed for the wild male counterparts, distinguishing them from the more monotone gray-brown females seen in the original film. The wild pack's coloration was noticeably richer and more striking.
The ornately detailed raptor eyes used in the film-featuring a sculpted yellow core, orange latticework, green lateral coloration, and a clear dental acrylic coating-were created by the team at Stan Winston Studio (SWS). During pre-production, the raptor eye was inserted into a fully detailed eye socket section to demonstrate the dinosaurs' potential eye movements to Steven Spielberg.
