That showdown from Jason and the Argonauts (1963) is the subject of the newest release in the Star Ace Ray Harryhausen Collection. The Hydra measures roughly 30 cm tall and 40 cm long. Seven necks fan out from the coiled body, every head snarling and ready to strike, with the tail looping back over the coils. The wrinkled hide, the row of spines down the back and the small differences between each head make this a unique and impressive piece. The paint is done by hand to match the creature Harryhausen built and animated.
Jason is set low in a fighting crouch, sword drawn and shield raised against the beast. On a separately sold base stands the dead tree with the Golden Fleece slung over a branch, the ram’s head lolling over a branch and the thick curled wool finished in gold so it catches the light. The scene is sculpted as separate pieces, so you can arrange it however you like, from the full standoff to the Hydra on its own taking up the whole shelf. This one belongs in the collection of anyone who grew up with Harryhausen’s monsters or discovered them later and never got over them.
